How to Get Paid for Doing What You Love
How to Get Paid for Doing What You Love There are jobs, and then there are things you love to doâ"that you wish were jobs. But do you know how to get paid for doing what you love to do, not just a piddling boring job? Believe it or not, being paid for something that you love to do is entirely possible. You simply have to find a way to do it, and, with some careful planning, you can do it. First, decide what it is you love to do. Is it knitting, carpentry, or even computer work? Some people love to plan and cater events; others love to provide rides forpeople. Once you have decided what it is that you want to do, start to look at it as something that you might like as a jobâ"to build into a business. What supplies and/or tools will you need? Will you need a vehicle, or not? Start to look around at possible places to get your supplies at a cheaper rate than you might at the local stores. Discount stores exist, and even if they are not nearby, perhaps it would be worth the cost of shipping to have the supplies sent to you. Your potential customer base is another issue to think about. Consider what it is that you are going to be doing, and decide how many people would pay you for it. Event planners, for example, are absolutely needed in cities like New York City or Washington, DC. However, the need for an event planner may not exist in Gold Coast, Oregon. Be aware of the need for your skill. Now that you do know how to get paid for doing what you loveâ"or the basics of itâ"consider some finer points. Advertising yourself so that your business will do well can be an issue. Whether your advertising will cost a lot to begin with is up to you. Should your business be something like a virtual assistant, take advantage of cheap online directories to advertise yourself. Go to freelancing sites to find jobs that you can bid on to start out as a virtual assistant, and build your resumeâ. Classified ads in the newspaper will workâ"but only in your local area unless you use a major newspaper. Consider other options as well. If you are going to want to do one-on-one work, such as driving for people, donât forget to employ word-of-mouth as a resource. Take advantage of using the people that you know for suggestions. Do they know someone that needs a driver, or an event planned, and would be willing to recommend you? Build a website, pure and simple. Use it so that you can know more about how to build to get paid for doing what you love. If you are willing to come to someoneâs home to fix their computer, tell about your skills and prices for your help on the website. Add a blog to it, to chronicle your experiences. Being paid for something that you love isnât too hardâ"you just have to plan it out well. Dig in with some determination as well, and success will be yours.

Are Most Job Openings Unadvertised
Are Most Job Openings Unadvertised Q: Is it true that 80% of job openings are never advertised? I always hear the statement that âYou know, 80% of job openings are never posted or advertised.â What do you think? Is this statement true or false? What has been your experience? If it is true, how are 80% of these jobs getting filled then? How can job seekers find these jobs? If it is false, why do people make these kinds of statements? Read More: My nosy coworker keeps joining my conversations A: From everything I can see, itâs false. It may have been true 30 years ago when it first started getting thrown around, but I donât know it was true even then. 80% is crazy high. Itâs not that some jobs donât go unadvertised; some do! But that 80% figure doesnât seem to be anywhere close to the reality. Jonathan Blaine has a good discussion of this here. As for why it keeps getting repeated, itâs being repeated by people who donât know any better, who arenât thinking critically about it or testing it against their own experience, and who in some cases have something to gain by convincing job seekers that finding a job is a mysterious thing they need to pay for help doing. Read More: How can I get my coworker to stop rambling and get to the point? Q: My coworker keeps interrupting me We hired a new member of our team almost a year ago now, and her work product is generally fantastic. Sheâs been well received by our team and people she works with on other teams, from what Iâve heard. Unfortunately, she has been a bit difficult for me to work with. She is constantly interrupting and correcting me, even when she isnât correct about her correction. Iâve tried giving her the floor when that happens and just ignoring it, and also tried just continuing my thought as though she didnât ignore me, but this morning it got to a breaking point. She asked me a question and halfway through my sentence interrupted me with her own answer. Iâm not sure if anyone else has experienced this or not, as I havenât brought it up with a colleague or our manager. On our team of six, I was the youngest until she was hired. It could be that nobody has told her yet and she just needs some coaching. It could be other reasons, but I donât think itâs right to speculate on those. Is it reasonable to bring it up with her in private? If so, how would you phrase it? Or better to bring it up with our manager? If so, how would you go about that? I know it seems childish to complain of someone interrupting you, but itâs gotten to the point where I feel disrespected. A: Iâd actually bring it up in the moment, which will make it less of a big deal than a whole separate conversation. From now on when she interrupts you, call it out! For example: * âActually, please hang on â" I wasnât done.â * âPlease let me finish.â * âWhoops, I was still talking. As I was sayingâ¦â Itâs possible that a few times of this will solve the problem. But if it doesnât, then after one of those interruptions Iâd say, âIâm not sure if you realize, but you interrupt me a lot. Would you be more vigilant about letting me finish my thought before you jump in?â Read More: This is a resume and cover letter that work These questions are adapted from ones that originally appeared on Ask a Manager. Realities of Being a Latina in Corporate America
Realities of Being a Latina in Corporate America Latinas are one of the fastest growing groups of women in the U.S. labor force. According to the United States Department of Labor, Latinas make up7.2 percent of the total U.S. workforce and are expected to make up 8.5 percent of the workforce by 2024.Additionally, college graduation rates for Latinas have increased faster than that of any other group of women.Latinas in the U.S. possess a number of abilities that translate into important business skills in this global economy. One such skill is the ability to navigate between cultures. Biculturalism allows Latinas to serve as connecting points to other countries as well as with the large and the growing Latino market. Aleidher key ability is bilingualism. Spanish is one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world. For Latinas in the U.S. who speak Spanish and English fluently, their bilingualism gives them an edge over other candidates. Additionally, Latinas value community. He lping and supporting others is imbedded in their culture. Given that biculturalism, bilingualism and people skills are key assets for corporations doing business in the U.S. and abroad, Latinas are uniquely positioned for leadership in Corporate America.Yet, while Latinas are a valuable talent schwimmbecken for U.S. employers in a global economy, they represent less than 1% of executives in the United States. Here are five realities of being Latina in corporate AmericaReality 1Latinas face judgement from family if they put their careers ahead of family. Almost 70 percent of working Latinas surveyed in a recent study by People en Espaol feel pressured by cultural expectations rooted in their heritage to get married and start a family within a certain time period in their lives. Reality 2Latina employees are paid less than every other race or gender in the United States. A study published by the National Womens Law Center (NWLC) shows that the gender wage gap for Latinas is mora than $ 1 million over their lifetimes. One contributing factor is that Latinas are overrepresented in low-wage jobs and are often financially penalized for their caregiving roles. Earning advanced degrees does little to close the wage gap. In fact, as Hispanic women increase their educational attainment, their pay gap with white men actually increases. White non-Hispanic men with only a college degree are paid, on average, $7.53 more than Latinas with an advanced degreeReality 3Latinas face barriers to promotion in male-dominated work environments. I could verstndigung im strafverfahren with it, but I wasnt thriving says Maria Higuerey-OHollearn, a Latina MBA in describing her experience working for a male-dominated Fortune 500 tech company where she was the sole Latina on a team with 2 Hispanics and 126 employees. Maria continues, I craved social encounters with my team that were more substantial than drinks and the shooting range. Jane Yiset Lopez, agrees, As Latinas working in male-dom inated industries, were always going to run into the sexism. It makes it difficult to find sponsors and allies to help you navigate the organizational culture in order to get ahead.Reality 4Latinas believe they must sacrifice their culture and identity in order to succeed in Corporate America. A recent study by the Center for Talent Innovation found that 53% of Latinas say that executive presence at their company is defined as conforming to traditionally white male standards. The study also found that Latinos in general who put the energy into repressing aspects of their personas at work, including their cultural identity, are more likely to advance in their careers.Reality 5Despite the challenges they face, Latinas are optimistic about their futures and their careers. According to the People in Espaolstudy, todays Latinas are not conforming to cultural customs and gender roles as strictly as they once did, and they look to their Latino heritage to enhance their lives. Fortune Magaz ines release of the 50 Most Powerful Latinas in Business is clear evidence that Latinas are breaking barriers. At the top of the 50 Most Powerful Latinas in Business list is Geisha Williams, President CEO of PEG, the first Latina to lead a Fortune 500 company. Williams is joined by another 15 Latina corporate executives. These women are shattering glass ceilings, opening doors and serving as role models for the next generation of Latina leaders.-- Ellie Nieves, JD, MBA, develops webinars, seminars, and coaching programs to help high achieving women show up, speak up, and step up in their careers. Employee Hunting in the Deep End - Spark Hire
Employee Hunting in the Deep End - Spark HireThe world is changing, whether its the seasons or the winning streak of the Chicago Blackhawks. The world fluctuates, people fluctuate, and the ways people communicate fluctuate. As a human resources professional it is your job to stay on top of these things so you can keep your company changing for the better. One of the things most affected by change in the last few years is the way in which candidates are applying for jobs and putting themselves out on the internet, forever changing the hiring process. Being the spunky fisher that you are, you need to make sure youre using the correct net in the correct pond to find the professionally delicious fish. These ponds are no longer just job boards or your inbox now you need to look through the streams of Twitter, the tributaries of Facebook (thank you fourth grade river studies), and the tide pools of LinkedIn during the hiring process. Granted, LinkedIn is a professional social network, but t he others are becoming increasingly popular for young potential employees to use to get their names out there. And with that influx of hip and fresh comes the creation of several semi-vomitous phrases like Twesume. But misguided mish-mash of words aside, the Twesume is a perfect example of the catalyst for change. Twesumes are essentially super streamlined minimalist resumes that tell you whether a candidate is a fish worth baiting. It makes things faster, more efficient. That is the catalyst of change speed. The faster you can do something the more you can do of it, thats assembly line logic. But its kept the industrialized world afloat for 100 years so it cant be the worst thing in the world, maybe its worth looking into. However, if youre hoping to have any success with these new resource pools then you need to know how to sift through them. For example, on Twitter you need to know how to do hashtag sort fields (thats ) because Twesumes are usually attached with those. Facebook has a very good keyword search bar so just punch in some industry titles and youll be good to go.But the yellow brick road doesnt end there it branches off into tons of different roads. You can look through industry specific forums to see if there are any highly active users who display any sort of expertise that could be of use to you (this is easily checked by sorting users by number of posts). Its no longer enough to look at just the applicants in your inbox during the hiring process the search field for hiring candidates has spread like wildfire so you need to search every corner, every Twesume, for the golden eggs.Have you adapted to the changing landscape as far as sourcing candidates?
